RUEDA AND THE VERDEJO VARIETY
The Verdejo grape variety has been associated with Rueda since ancient times. It was brought into our region by the Mozarabs who came to repopulate the Duero basin, along with Cántabros and Vascones, during the reign of Alfonso VI in the XI th Century.
It would seem that the Mozarabs brought the Verdejo variety from the north of Africa. Years and years in the area have created a fusion betwen the variety, the climate and the land. As well as adapting itself to the plain's extreme continental climate, Verdejo has changed with fashions in wine-making: from strong, old wines to young, fruity, modern wines.
After the Phylloxera disease considerably reduced the number of hectares cultivated previously, Verdejo gave way to the introduction of other grapes varieties such as Viura, typical in Rioja and Catalonia, and know as Macabeo in the latter region. Palomino, typical in Jerez and now of decreasing importance in our region, and more modern varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, from the Loire valley, have adapted well to our area, producing intensely aromatic wines.
